COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY PROGRAMME

 

Although the CHRD was established exclusively to legal services to the political victims, the country situation, revealed the focus of CHRD could be expanded  to wider horizons and therefore, introduced the Coalition of Civil Society Programme to bring state sector and civil society closer to promote justice and good governance through campaign and advocacy, human rights awareness training and  capacity building of NGOs, and CBOs working in the North, East and plantation sectors. And also data collection and documentation, dissemination of information by way of publications and website and networking with NGOs, CBOs and civil society activists locally and overseas. A number of activities are taking place under the following components of the programme.

COALITION FOR CIVIL SOCIETY 2007

 

In 2007, public seminars titled ‘Coalition for Civil Society’ were held in Kantale, Mannar, Hatton, Nuwaraeliya, Ampara, Vavuniya and Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Trincomalee, Bandarawela and Colombo. A total of 800 participants from NGOs, CBOs and civil society groups participated in the programme.

A Participatory Rural Appraisal training workshop for 12 activists from 06 districts (It was not possible to bring down 02 selected activists from Jaffna to Colombo because of the movement restrictions imposed by the government) was conducted June 23 2007 at the CHRD office in Colombo.

2007 at the Gamini Vidyalya hall (32 participants)

 

Seminar held in Batticaloa on July 17, 2007 at the Public Library Auditorium (132 participants)

 

Current situation of the Muslim community in the Eastern province

The Centre for Human Rights and Development (CHRD) organized a discussion for the Muslim community in the Eastern province to highlight issues faced by them following the liberation of Eastern province by the State. The meeting was held on August 5, 2007 at the CHRD auditorium in Colombo. CHRD was the first organization to initiate such a meeting since liberating East.

UN Human Rights Day Programme

A cultural programme was held in the Trincomalee district to celebrate the UN Human Rights Day on                      December 10, 2007 at the Town Hall.

SOCIAL MOBILIZATION AND CBO MANAGEMENT 2005

 

During theis period the CHRD is carried out a programme tiled social mobilization & CBO Management, a capacity building training programmes for local NGOs and CBOs (Community Based Organizations) in the North, East and plantation sector. Training includes CBO Management, Social Mobilization and Human Rights Awareness Raising.
